Oh man, I have nothing to talk about tonight. And I’m just now starting this post at 11:00. But no worries: I bet I can BS 300 words in under and hour.

Oh yeah, I almost forgot — I saw Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix last night. (Phew, that should be good for a paragraph or two!) It was good. Really dark though. I don’t mean in terms of mood, but just what was on the screen. The last half of the movie is basically a big pile of inky dimness lightly braised in a puddle of gloom and garnished with bouquets of shadowy drab. That is, it wasn’t very bright. After one particularly long stretch of this sort of thing they cut to an outside shot on a snowy street in the daylight and my retinas started smoking.

What I didn’t like about the movie: Luna Lovegood. I can kind of see how she might have been amusing in the book, but she was really annoying in the movie. She seemed so much like one of those people that effect lame, obvious affectations just so people will think they’re cool in an offbeat way. I find few things as irritating as forced, phoney quirkiness. Anyway, her introduction could’ve been nearly excusable if she’d at least had some purpose in the film. But all she ever does is say tritely weird, unhelpful things and reveal that her mother died. I really don’t get why they included her.

(Tangent: Criminey, half the students at Hogwarts have dead parents. What’s up with that?)

It’s probably the weakest Harry Potter movie yet, but it wasn’t dramatically worse than the others. Definitely watchable. Better than Transformers, anyway.

After the movie, I came home and Brett and I went to Denny’s. We’re always bemoaning the lack of late night eateries here, but for some reason neither of us ever remember there’s a halfway-decent (compared to Jack in the Box, the only other all-night place in Pullman) 24/7 restaurant just a half-mile down the road. I had a western burger.

Some 4channage, since I haven’t done that in a while:

Man, I wish I’d known about that Denny’s back in 2001-2002.

I know you said it was good, but you failed to mention ANYTHING positive about that Harry Potter movie. Given that I don’t go in for Harry Potter in particular or dark (visually) movies in general, I think I’ll miss this one. Just like all the rest.

Re: “anything positive”: Rectified in post #866. But you wouldn’t have wanted to start with the 4th one anyway — too much wouldn’t make sense if you hadn’t seen 1, 2 and 3.

Well, naturally, I imagine I’d go watch the preceding films if I actually cared to watch the fourth, which I still don’t.
