11:56 pm, Sunday, July 1st, 2007Last night’s dinner came out great. Boy, I love steamed zuchinni. Too bad our Safeway only carries the “organic” stuff (which is more expensive and of lower quality). But I found some reasonably priced sirloin that turned out to be very nice. (Check out that marbling!) And yes, I know my barbeque is filthy, but TBH I think stuff tastes better from a grill encrusted with burnt fat and greasy cinders. Just scrape the surface with a metal spatula and you’re good to go.
Afterwards I made custard — boy is that stuff tempermental. I need to get a double boiler or figure out a decent kludge with what I’ve got. Used my circulon pan. Worked out pretty well till the mixture got just a tiny bit too hot and began to curdle. Didn’t change the flavor any, but it made it slightly lumpy. Anyway, I stuck it in the fridge overnight and this morning used it for a kind of “fair food” dessert/brunch. Big dollop of custard in the middle with a well for raspberry pie filling, ringed by whipped cream and a halo of deep-fried tortilla chips dusted with confectioner’s sugar. Very unhealthy, but oh-so-tasty.
I DL’d the Ratatouille soundtrack. I’m completely in love with the first track, Le Festin (French for “the feast”). Which reminds me: I’ve got to get The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou soundtrack… Jones was telling me that it had all those awesome French songs from the movie. (Looks like it doesn’t have the French-lady version of Paint It, Black on it though…? That was one of the best parts of the movie.)
Recent DS games: Trauma Center: Under the Knife and Mario and Luigi: Partners in Time. The former is fairly fun, but has very poor instructions (it took me several operations to figure out that they like your sutures to be wide and sloppy). The latter is really enjoyable so far (I find it hilarious that “stache” is a quantifiable character attribute), but I’m concerned that the combat system will get tiresome.

RE: Life Aquatic sndk. The songs are all David Bowie covers sang in Portuguese by the man who was actually in the movie Seu Jorge. The rest of the sndk is awesome too with the mark mothersbaugh stuff, typical of wes anderson films. i don’t mean to be a know it all, but this is one of my favorite movies and favorite soundtracks of all times. I even have had “Ping Island/Lightning Strike Rescue Op” as my ring tone for the last 2 years! :)

Oh man, Hank…what are you planning on grilling for the Fourth?
I think I’m going to a friend’s house for burgers all day (literally, he turns his grill on at noon, and it doesn’t go off until 9pm). The first time I went there, I found myself wolfing down three double cheeseburgers AND an Omaha steak. In my defense, at least it was staggered over an eight hour span.
The really scary thing is, there were some middle school kids there too–girls, no less–that out-ate me!
And why did you not grill that zucchini? If the party on the Fourth gets cancelled, I’ve got a back up plan: rib-eye steaks, grilled tomatoes (better than zucchini, IMO), and grilled zucchini.

Re: amy: Doh, Portugese! They sound pretty similar to me. I just realized the French “Paint It, Black” song I was thinking of was from Talladega Nights. Dunno how I could’ve gotten that confused with TLAwSZ…
I really liked TLA. Moreso than Rushmore, but not as much as The Royal Tenenbaums. Are you as psyched for The Darjeeling Limited as I am?
Re: Peter: Haha, I dunno… burgers do sound pretty good. I haven’t made those in quite a while. Three doubles and a steak? Yowza, that’s some spread — I wish I lived near Tarzana!
Re: zuchinni: Arrrgghh, I forgot! Totally slipped my mind. Oh well, next time for sure.
That “backup plan” sounds pretty good. :)

I like Trauma Centre — even got my nine-year-old daughter playing it.
